ROADMAP: THE FIRST SEASONS
A strategic guide designed to understand management and build an unbeatable economic and sporting foundation.
Welcome, Manager. This guide is not just a to-do list; it is the foundation of your future success. In Hattrick, mistakes in the first weeks are costly, but if you follow this advice, you will have a solvent and competitive club. The goal is to start the economic engine: training young players to sell them or keep them.
Phase 1: The Launch (Weeks 1-2)
Initial Capital
The Manager License is your mandatory first step. Complete all challenges immediately. This will inject €300,000, vital for your first investments in staff and players.
Capital Investment
Before touching the stadium, focus your €300,000 license funds on:
- Quality trainees: 17-year-olds who will be your future gold mine.
- Assistant coaches: They make players level up faster.
- Savings: Keep funds for a future "Excellent" coach.
What to do with the initial squad?
When you inherit the team, you will have many players with no future. Be ruthless:
- Old/Low-level players: If they have no standout skills (minimum "passable"), put them up for sale for €0 or fire them directly. They only waste money on wages.
- Relocation: If a veteran has a decent level, use them to fill non-trained positions (e.g., if you train playmaking, put your "grandpas" in defense or attack).
The Coach: Your first big dilemma
Hattrick gives you a "Passable" (level 6) coach at the start. Is it enough? Yes, but only to get started.
- The initial coach allows you to train at a reasonable speed during the first weeks.
- The winning strategy: As soon as your economy is stable, upgrade to a "Solid" (level 7) coach.
- Saving tip: Look for a "Solid" coach with "Poor" (level 3) leadership. He's much cheaper, and in lower divisions, leadership isn't necessary yet.
Training Configuration
- Intensity: 100% (Always).
- Stamina: 10-12% (For youngsters).
- Main Skill: Choose one (Defense, Playmaking, or Scoring) and don't change it for 2-3 seasons.
Phase 2: Stabilization and Caution (Weeks 3-16)
The Stadium: Don't rush
A rookie mistake is expanding the stadium right away. The initial 12,000 capacity is enough for the first seasons.
When to expand? Only when you regularly fill the stadium in league matches and have about 1,400 members. Expanding too early creates maintenance costs that can drain your finances.
Smart Expansion
When the time comes, follow these percentages to maximize revenue:
| Terraces | Basic | Seats | VIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60% | 23.5% | 14% | 2.5% |
The Future: The Youth System
From week 3, decide how to bring in new talent: buy them on the market or create your own youth system. Hattrick offers two systems (Scouting Network or Youth Academy). Note: these are mutually exclusive; you can only choose one.
Option A: Scouting Network (Old)
Invest money weekly and once a month "pull" a random player. Simple, time-efficient, and ideal for those who want no complications.
Option B: Youth Academy (New)
Manage your own youth team, decide tactics and training. More complex and time-consuming, but much more fun and potentially more profitable.

Phase 3: Optimization (Weeks 17-35)
By now, you've completed your first full season. Many managers get nervous wanting immediate results and change training or sell everything. Don't. Patience in this phase is what makes you rich in the next.
Your Management Routine
Biweekly Financial Check
In Hattrick, the economy is measured every two weeks. It's normal to be negative when playing away; compensate with gate receipts when playing at home. Keep the global balance positive.
Staff Monitoring
Once your economy is healthy, switch to Level 5 Assistants. It's the best investment to speed up your youngsters' development.
Tactical Planning
Always set lineups for League and Friendlies to ensure your trainees never miss a minute of training.
THE DILEMMA: SELL OR MULTISKILL?
When your trainees reach Brilliant (11) or Magnificent (12) level, you face your most important decision:
Option A: Sell
Sell the player to triple or quadruple your investment. This provides millions to upgrade the stadium or buy veterans for promotion.
Option B: Multiskill
Instead of selling, keep them and switch training (e.g., from Playmaking to Scoring). This creates highly valuable "multiskill" players.
Phase 4: The Final Path and Future Outlook
1. Reinforce with Veteran Players (30-35+ years)
Economic Advantages
Veterans are much cheaper to buy and their wages drop as they get older past age 29.
Sporting Advantages
High experience improves individual performance and prevents "nervousness" events.
Disadvantages
Stamina drops faster and injuries take much longer to heal.
2. Cycle Training ("Multitask")
- Hybrid Players: Multiskill players are the ones that allow you to reach the highest divisions.
- Loyalty Power: Keeping players for several seasons grants a +1 level performance bonus.
The Optimal Strategy
- Sell half of your trainees to build a "war chest".
- Keep the best for multiskill training and loyalty bonuses.
- Fill gaps with youth academy graduates or cheap veterans.
